Hey guys,
I finally found out what was causing the error on my machine :D

It took me a lot of searching, but when i installed the MySQL GUI Tools and had an empty root password, i figured it out!

The MySQLAdministrator GUI Tool started and stated that there was no log and/or configuration file loaded/specified, however i did see that in the actual initialization and installation of the package..

I am using a xampp installed MySQL and Apache. It seems that the install doesn't handle spaces in the file path for the log correctly ... when i looked in the installed services using 'regedit' under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mysql
there is a key called ImagePath with the following contents:
"D:\program files\xampp\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe" "--defaults-file=d:\Program Files\xampp\mysql\bin\my.cnf" mysql

Note the actual path to the my.cnf file is specified, but the quotation marks are wrong... The line below is what it should look like.

"D:\program files\xampp\mysql\bin\mysqld-nt.exe" --defaults-file="d:\Program Files\xampp\mysql\bin\my.cnf" mysql

After changing this and restarting, i could get into the mysql installation using PHP, command line and MySQLAdmin :D

Hope this helps some people out there!

regards,

Ferry
